Facing crisis, U.S. rural hospitals gain federal lawmakers’ attention

A fiercely quiet battle is brewing on Capitol Hill as congressional members hasten efforts to thwart rural hospital closures across the nation to protect the delivery of essential health care services to 57 million Americans, the majority covered by Medicaid or Medicare.

But it’s nothing compared to the assaults going on at local levels around the United States as cash-starved rural hospitals shut down, leaving needy patients with limited health care options and the surrounding community without a major economic contributor.

The situation is one more part of America’s overall health care crisis that needs a fix yesterday.
