Mental Health Emergencies a Focus of ACEP 2016

From Medscape:

The lengthy waits in the emergency department experienced by patients with psychiatric illnesses and the problem of opioid abuse are just two of the timely topics that will be addressed here at the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) 2016 Scientific Assembly.

“Psychiatric patients, especially pediatric psychiatric patients, can wait a week in emergency departments before placement in a psychiatric facility,” said ACEP spokesperson Alison Haddock, MD, from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

“Nationwide, we have a deficit of beds for psychiatric patients, which leads to these patients staying in the emergency department setting longer than we would want,” added ACEP spokesperson Christopher Amato, MD, from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.
