Rural Hospital CEO: “Hands-On” RN

Before Rod Harkleroad, the new CEO at Haywood Regional Medical Center, even reported for his first day on the job, he donned scrubs and joined the medical staff on the floor, rounding for eight hours on a Sunday night.

As a nurse, Harkleroad said that was the best way to know what was going on in the hospital he was about to lead.

“When I go into a room, I can tell real quick if something isn’t the way it should be,” he said in a recent interview. “I don’t want the staff to look at me as an executive. In a small, rural hospital, the CEO has to do more than just sit behind a desk.”
