Telehealth to the rescue: Oklahoma hospital back in business

From Heartland TRC:

A few months ago, the Sayre Memorial Hospital was forced to close down, leaving the rural community of Sayre, Oklahoma without access to local medical facilities. Thanks to telehealth and People’s Choice Hospital, Sayer Memorial’s closure might not be permanent after all.

People’s Choice Hospital works with EmpowerSystems to leverage state-of-the-art telemedicine technology and improve access to care. The way it works is simple. People’s Choice Hospital has created a national telehealth hub which includes on-call physicians from all medical specialties. They staff local clinics with primary care physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners in order to provide basic on-site care. If the patient needs to see a specialist, the doctors use Facetime to connect with an on-call PCH specialist in as little as 20 minutes.

Dr. Seth Guterman, the president of PCH, hopes to reopen the hospital to the Sayre community in as little as 30 days, and plans to hire a similar number of employees as the hospital had prior to the closure.
