Emergency physicians say patients don’t understand health coverage and insurance companies aren’t helping

From the Advocate:

Ninety percent of emergency room physicians in a survey say ER patients don’t understand what their policies cover, and insurance companies are offering “affordable” policies that cover very little.

The report from the American College of Emergency Physicians also says eight in 10 emergency physicians are seeing patients with insurance who have foregone or delayed care because of high out-of-pocket costs.

“Certainly the patients I encounter on a regular basis don’t have much of a clue about what their insurance covers. … They know they purchase health insurance, but when it comes to knowing who they can see when, where and how, there’s definitely a large disconnect,” said Dr. Mark Rice, president of the ER physician group’s Louisiana chapter.
