ER physician: Addiction ‘does not discriminate’

From the Standard =Speaker:

Dr. Ken Katz, an emergency physician and medical toxicologist, speaks passionately about addiction and how it affects a person’s life, the community and emergency rooms.

Katz, of Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest near Allentown, said emergency departments are strained not only by the national epidemic of heroin use, cast recently into the media limelight, but also by the less-talked-about narcotic substances that are just as dangerous.

Clinicians are on the front lines when it comes to overdoses of any drug, seeing a universal need to help patients of substance abuse — an illness that can happen to anyone.

It’s rich, it’s poor, it touches all races and all creeds.

“It does not matter. It does not discriminate,” Katz said.
