Doctors Plead for 10% Medicare Bonus in Stimulus Package

Primary care physicians, that is… not ED docs… yet…

American College of Physicians President Jeffrey Harris sent a letter yesterday to HHS nominee Tom Daschle (pictured) asking that the Obama administration’s economic-stimulus package include a 10% pay bonus for all services provided by primary care docs under Medicare for a period of 18 months.

The letter also requests that primary care practices, especially small ones, get a piece of the funding pie for health information technology. Obama has pledged to spend billions of dollars on that endeavor.

With the country in recession, Harris says that primary care doctors are struggling even more than they had been. And help for the docs, he writes, will trickle down to patients whose pocketbooks are pinched:
