Sexual Assault Advocates Need More Trained Nurses in ER to Prosecute Sex Offenders

From WVNSTV:

After a sexual assault, the most important thing advocates say a victim can do is head straight to the emergency room.

There, a sexual assault nurse examiner can collect critical evidence in prosecuting a sex offender.

“They manage the exam kit. They identify bruises on the body. They can be an expert witness and they can also orchestrate the chain of custody,” said Twanna Warner, a sexual assault victims’ advocate with the Women’s Resource Center.

When minutes matter, these nurses may mean the difference between whether a criminal is taken off the street or whether the individual goes free.

She is trying to raise money through the Women’s Resource Center to support training for those interested in becoming SANE certified. “They need a SANE nurse to ensure that all the evidence is collected properly and that it’s not tampered with.”
