From MedPage Today:
Positive results on a contrast-enhanced whole-body CT scan — a “pan-scan” — are conclusive proof of injury in patients with major blunt trauma, researchers reported.
But negative results don’t rule out the possibility of injury, according to Dirk Stengel, MD, PhD, of the Berlin-based Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin, and colleagues.
In a single-institution study, the pan-scan missed injuries that subsequently needed monitoring in the ICU in more than 6% of patients, Stengel and colleagues reported online in CMAJ.
