From Huliq:

However, the woman returned to the ER feeling even worse than the first time. And this time the doctors noticed that her skin had a yellowish color. She was jaundiced, which meant that her liver was failing. The initial diagnosis was acute hepatitis.

However, as the doctors began running tests, they were unable to find any evidence of the virus. Confused, they asked the woman about her diet and what activities she was undertaking in recent weeks. It was then that she revealed that, most recently, she had been ingesting up to 10 bottles of 5-Hour Energy a day.

What doctors now believe the key problem was involved the ingredient niacin, which is also referred to as vitamin B3. When taken in excessive amounts niacin can cause liver failure.

“It felt like a stainless steel plate falling on me from about 50 feet in the air. It was really powerful,” Jennings recalled.
