EM Pioneer, Dr. Frank J. Baker II, 1945-2011

From the Chicago Tribune:

“There was a time, and not that long ago, when emergency medicine physicians weren’t given a lot of respect within our profession,” said former colleague Dr. David Howes, a professor of emergency medicine and pediatric emergency medicine at U. of C. “Frank helped change all that. He was a fierce advocate of quality emergency medical care for patients.”

Dr. Baker also was one of four founders of the Emergency Medical Service Systems for Chicago, created in the late 1970s to coordinate the services of paramedics and other medical emergency care professionals throughout the city.

St. Luke’s opens SAFE room for sexual-assault victims

From the Sioux City Journal:

St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center has opened the Frances Kline SAFE room for victims of sexual assault.

The room,  in the hospital’s Emergency Department, is designed to help comfort patients with warm furnishings, peaceful art images, a private bathroom with shower and equipment stored away from view, a release from St. Luke’s says.

Sexual assault victims who are admitted to St. Luke’s are assisted by one of the hospital’s specially trained registered nurses, who ensure examinations are carried out properly and the patient receives compassionate, specialized care, the release says.

Through a partnership with the Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, victims also receive new clothing before they are discharged. Advocates from the council are available to provide information on support groups and safe housing alternatives.
