Oklahoma physicians group pitches idea to attract doctors to rural, underserved areas

A doctor’s group made a push Thursday for legislation that would help keep primary care physicians in the state.

The Oklahoma Academy of Family Physicians is proposing legislation that would provide student loan repayment assistance to doctors. In return, doctors would agree to make a four-year commitment to practice primary care in a medically underserved community, such as rural areas or in certain parts of cities, said Sam Blackstock, executive director of the physicians group.
